I hope your June is going well so far! In Alberta (Canada), it’s finally lush and green, with the addition of a few incredible thunderstorms. I have been enjoying the weather – that won’t last long enough hear – alongside some music I would love to share with you!
As everyone is brunching, spa-ing, shopping, and laughing with their mothers, I’m comfortably in bed, remembering you and how safe the world was when you were next to me.
I would give anything for five minutes just to ask you how you’ve been. I want to tell you about all you’ve missed, while you’ve been on the greatest vacation of all time. Did you see me? Did you see my heartbreak, did you see when I spoke fiercely the same way you did, did you see the party I threw for dad?
Mother’s Day became so bittersweet when you left us. My heart breaks when I wish so terribly that you were here. I wish with every ounce of my being that we became the mother and daughter, doubled in age, sitting on the park bench together. I wish that life had allowed us to have more time together than my troubled teenage years. I wish that when I become a mother, you would be my late night call pleading, “mom, I can’t get him to stop crying!” I wish that you were going to be next to me on my wedding day. I wish I could drive to your house in the morning for coffee, the same way you did with your mom. I wish I didn’t have moments of feeling like I was robbed of my time with you.
You gave me some of the best of your days. You gave me your Christmas-morning smile (where you turned into a kid again). You gave me your old-soul advice that I will carry with me throughout my life. You gave me your loopy wine-drunk (rarely, but hilariously). You gave me your vulnerability, and you gave me your fierceness. You gave me my whole world, literally and metaphorically, and you gave me – you created – the woman I am today…the woman moulded, taught, and loved by you.
Happy Mother’s Day to my ma, who taught me all about life, even through her death. On a day that’s meant to be full of gifts and celebrations for you, I feel as though I have received the ultimate gift – being your daughter.
After the demise of my live-in “forever” relationship, I became lost and was looking for answers. I was gifted a book, written by Gabrielle Bernstein, called The Universe Has Your Back. Desperate for clarity, I cracked it open, and flowed through the easy-to-read brook.
For those reading this that need a sense of clarity, peace, or understanding, I urge you to pick this up. I do not say this lightly, but this book changed my life. It touches on meditation, control, honouring your feelings, and the plan the universe has for you. Not necessarily always a “spirit junkie” myself, Bernstein spoke to me in a language I could understand, and through her writing, she made me feel cradled by the Universe during my own difficult time.
I have implemented Bernstein’s meditations and thoughts into my everyday life. I have allowed myself to release my control to the Universe, in belief that there is a plan greater than the one that I have for myself. This, in itself, has given me a peace of mind. I have been able to set free my anxiety, and in turn, liberate myself.
I leave with you a few of my favourite quotes by Gabrielle Bernstein:
“In every situation, you will have two choices: will you learn through love or will you learn from fear?”
“Practice saying this prayer before every encounter that triggers the shadows from your past, ‘I want to see this person for the first time'”
“You have the power to create the world you want to see”
“The key to serenity is trusting that the universe has your back”
Thanks for reading loves! What are your favourite books lately?
Summer in Canada is coming to an end. Our hot, sunny days have been replaced with reddened leaves and rain. It’s been a nice change of pace, and I’m excited to get my scarves out for the season change.
Along with that, I have a few favourites to wrap up the summer:
Dior Blooming Bouquet – Unfortunately, with summer coming to an end, this scent will likely be locked away until Spring. It is so light, and airy – such an easy, beautiful, girly scent. In the words of Charles Gross, it smells a lot like “raspberries that have been left out in the heat”.
It Cosmetics CC+ Illumination – When I first received this, I was on the fence about it. Usually I will mix it with a matte foundation to tone down the dewey-ness in it, but it leaves a lovely finish to my skin.
Too Faced Sweet Tea Bronzer – Another product best suited for summer, it gives such a beautiful, sunbeam glow.
MAC Melba – I’ve mentioned this in a favourites before. I just keep going back to it. It’s a perfect blush for any makeup look.
Sephora Radiant Luminizing Drops in Morning Light – These are gold. They create such a natural glow at the high points of my face.
Bath and Body Works Leaves Candle – I treated myself with my annual fall candle shop at Bath and Body Works. In previous years, I have never picked Leaves up. However, after hearing Zoella rave about it, I did. I have loved the scent!
Hunter Rain Boots – The mass amounts of rain we have gotten lately, has given me the excuse to pull my Hunters out again.
Way Down We Go – Kaleo
Rise Up – Andra Day
Carry Me – Kygo ft. Julia Michaels
Closer – The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey
Corner Booth – Luke Bryan
Alright, I hope you all had a lovely month. What are your recent favourites? What are you doing to prep for the changing seasons?
Goodness, it’s been awhile. The last couple of months have been hectic for me! I moved, went through a breakup, and came out the other side. So in better news, I’m back, and I have a list of perfume I’m dying to add to my arsenal.
Marc Jacobs Decadence
At first glance, I didn’t think this perfume would be something I would lust over. However, after curiosity lead me to spritz a bit of this on my wrist, I realized that it lasted forever on my skin. With notes of Italian Plum, Saffron, and Amber, it is certainly an interesting scent.
Lancôme La Vie Est Belle
At the beginning of the summer, I spent an evening of drinks with a friend of mine who had this decadent perfume on. The scent was gorgeous. Unfortunately, I likely won’t pick this up until next year. I find the notes of iris and patchouli a perfect fit for summer (and in Canada, we are slowly but surely kissing out summer goodbye).
Tom Ford Noir Pour Femme
I’ll be honest, in the past, I have never been particularly blown away by Tom Ford perfumes (perhaps I’m not complex enough for his fragrances). However, Noir Pour Femme is so sexy, and I feel as though it would be a perfect addition to my collection moving into fall.
DOLCE&GABBANA The One
This recommendation came straight from Charles Gross’ YouTube channel. He tends to like similar fragrances to me, and he raved about this one. Surely, I smelled it, and now I’m dying to get my hands on it. It’s a good fall scent, even though the notes of Bergamot, Mandarin, Lychee, and Peach would suggest otherwise.
Elizabeth and James Nirvana Bourbon
I am a proud owner of Elizabeth and James Black. I love the sexy, somewhat masculine scent. Recently, I saw this scent pop up on Sephora.com, and I’m dying to try it. Unlike the other fragrances, I haven’t smelled this one. However, with my track record, I’m sure I’ll love it just as much as their other perfumes. Nirvana Bourbon has notes of vanilla bourbon, tuberose, and oakwood.
So there we have it, my list of all the perfumes I’m dying to own. Thank you all so much for being so patient with me during my time away! I am through the woods and seeing the light again.
Have you tried any of these scents? If so, what did you think? Even more importantly – what scents would you suggest as we enter fall/winter on this side of the globe?
I wish all of you beautiful people a happy week full of love and light,
I finally bit the bullet and spend the $120 (CAD) on a new bottle of perfume. If you’ve been around my blog for awhile, you know I am obsessed with fragrances.
I’ve had my eye on Replica Beach Walk by Maison Martin Margiela for months . The line itself is absolutely incredible. The idea behind Replica is to replicate a moment and transport you there through scent.
Beach Walk does just that. It honestly smells like salty skin, the summer sun and lapping waves. How they did it? I have no idea, but I’m glad it’s finally propped up on my shelf with my other fragrances.
I have to admit, I’m not a huge reader. I’ll pick up a book then and now, however, no book has ever spoke to me more than Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat, Pray, Love”. It is a gorgeous book about travelling, depression, love, lust and finding yourself.
I swear, that book is my bible – I’ve gone through and highlighted each of my favourite lines. I’ll share a few of my favourite quotes from it:
“Somewhere within us all, there does exist a supreme self who is eternally at peace”
“When the past has passed from you at last, let go. Then climb down and begin the rest of your life. With great joy.”
“There’s nothing you can ever do to lose my love. I will protect you until you die, and after your death I will still protect you. I am stronger than Depression and I am braver than Loneliness and nothing will ever exhaust me”
“I’m choosing happiness over suffering. I know I am. I’m making space for the unknown future to fill up my life with yet-to-come surprises.”
For those who are still reading, I urge you to watch this video. It is our dear Elizabeth Gilbert speaking about passion and curiosity and pressure.
I have a large collection of perfumes and on a handful of occasions, Kevin has found me in our closet smelling my favourite ones. There’s just something so intriguing about a good scent – it can make you feel relaxed, calm, confident, sexy or like the girl next door.
I thought I would put together a compilation of my five favourite perfumes.
My favourite perfume right now has to be Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent. It’s the newest fragrance of my collection, but it’s quickly shot it’s way to the top. You’ll notice the dark notes of coffee, it gives the scent a sexy scent perfect for night time. However, with the orange intertwined into the fragrance, it adds depth and a hint of sweetness.
In second place comes Nirvana Black by Elizabeth and James. I think this might as well be my signature scent. It’s the most unique from all the scents I own. It smells mildly masculine, which makes me feel powerful and strong. However, the vanilla notes definitely add the feminine edge to it. This fragrance is probably best suited for the cooler months, however, I’ll likely wear it whenever I need an edge of confidence.
Viva La Juicy Gold Couture by Juicy Couture. This scent is sweet like berries. There’s such a freshness and liveliness to this perfume, which is tangled with amber and caramel. In my opinion, it’s best suited for spring and summer (and whenever you want to feel like the girl next door.)
Bonbonby Viktor and Rolf – Viktor and Rolf, though expensive, create a perfume like no other. Their Flowerbomb creation is one of the best sellers (unfortunately I’m not a huge floral woman.) Bonbon is a sexier take on the gourmand scents. It’s an extremely complex perfume with notes of tangerine essence, peach essence and caramel. Some may find it sickly sweet, but I do suggest it’s a perfume worth smelling when you pass it.
Alienby Thierry Mugler – I find this perfume one of the heaviest I own. I prefer the eau de toilette over the eau de perfume, just to lighten it up a little bit. It’s flirty and mysterious and their is so much depth to this fragrance.
My bonus perfume Hypnotic Poisonby Dior – I feel like everybody has owned this perfume at some point. You know those evenings when you want to feel intriguing and passionate? This perfume does that for me. Hot date? Hypnotic Poison is the answer. I feel like it’s something that will keep people remembering you.
I would love to hear everybody’s favourites, as I’m always looking for more to add to my collection.
